Sound Production
Ambient sound:
The sounds of everything going on around the person who is speaking (wind & sea at the beach)
Synchronised sound:
The words are spoken to match the lip movements of the speaker (often used in movies & musical programmes)
Voice over sound:
Sound that is dubbed onto any picture sequences - can't see the person (documentaries & advertisements)
Sound effects:
Usually added to the soundtrack at the dubbing stage. Sound effects can be sub-divided into two types:
- Sounds to match actions of the event on the screen (door slamming & glass breaking)
- Sounds that are about a scene but do not match anything shown (birds singing might accompany a scene in the countryside)
Music:
Music is the final sound added to film/ television shows in post production.
Music is used to make the audience feel certain emotions as they watch the action on screen.
In high-budget films or television productions, specially composed music will be commissioned for the soundtrack
Diegetic sound:
Sound whose source is visible on the screen or those source is implied to be present by the action of the film:
-Voices of characters
- Sounds made by objects in the story
- Music as represented as coming from instruments in the story space
Non-diegetic sound:
Sound whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action (comes from outside the story space) :
- Narrator's commentary
- Sound effects which added for the dramatic effect
- Mood music
Chanel No.5 advert:
The advert included classical music, non-diegetic sound. The purpose of this is to set the mood of a gentle love story; this makes the audience feel like the perfume is needed for a successful love life to attract their partner. The music is aimed at women 25+.
Fifa 18 El Tornado advert:
The advert included music aimed at people 13+. This is because the music is lively and upbeat. Another sound used is diegetic sound, when the characters are speaking to each other, when messages are coming through and when the two artists are singing. Music got more intense as the advert continued to build suspension.
Black Mirror episode:
The music in the episode is non-diegetic as it creates and sets the mood for what is to come. For example, in the beginning the music is positive as the protagonist is happy and enjoying herself; when things begin to go bad for her the music becomes louder and more intense. By using non-diegetic sound it creates a dramatic effect for the audience as they are able to understand the mood of the characters and can guess what is going to happen next creating audience gratification. I believe that the music is vital to the show as otherwise it would've been strange for it to be silent at during parts of the episode.
The sound effects used in Black Mirror are diegetic, a key example of this is when the protagonist receives rating on her smart device she is using. Another example is when she receives a phone call as a ringtone is heard.
A mix of different sounds have been used to entice the audience; by using both diegetic and non-diegetic it allows the audience to concentrate on different things at different periods in the episode.
Bad Boys III Trailer:
The trailer includes non-diegetic sound through the use of music. The music is used to create tension and thrill at certain points in the trailer; this then entices the audience and makes them more interested and excited to watch the film. The trailer includes mood music that can be heard during intervals when the song isn't playing. The soundtrack used will also be recognisable by the audience who have watched the previous films. The soundtrack can first be heard at 0:03 seconds when the audience is introduced the the drama and action the film includes. Like many other trailers, the soundtrack cuts out when there is dialogue and mood music is played faintly in the background, however, from 1:35 to the end of the trailer this changes to prove that there is drama and excitement, instead the soundtrack fades out when the characters are speaking.
Diegetic sound is used through the voices of the characters. Thought the entire trailer each actor uses their own voice when they speak. We are introduced to diegetic sound 0:03 seconds into the trailer when we seen the protagonists are talking to each other on a rooftop.
The trailer also includes sound effects. The audience first sees this at 0:21 seconds when the car door hits the fire hydrant. Another time diegetic noise can be heard is when guns are shot throughout the trailer. At 1:40 we can also hear the car quickly turning around the corner.

Stacey Dooley - Drugs Online
In the documentary non-diegetic sound is used in the form of narration, Dooley can often be heard explaining what is going on and what she has found out. This makes the audience listen to what she is saying and evokes shock onto the audience as Dooley is discussing a serious topic.
Shutter Island
- Dialogue - The dialogue is simple, the actors refrain from using long and complex sentences.
- Sound motif - Grows stronger as the character's story develops
- Music - The music in Shutter Island is intense and loud, this is used to create tension and suspension for the audience. Classical music - piano/ violins. The classical music becomes more intense, this is to reflect when something bad happens or is about to happen.
- Sound effects - The film includes wind sounds when the protagonist is speaking to his dead wife. The wind noises are used to show that she is a just a figure of his imagination and will leave again soon. The film also includes sound effects of guns, this is to shows the violence and horror the protagonist saw and/ or took part in.
Foley Sound Effects:
- They are applied manually producing sound effects in the studio.
- The objective of Foley recording is to produce controlled sound effects in a regulated studio environment.
- Foley effects are produced in a specially designed sound studio known as a Foley Stage.
- Foley effects are usually produced in sync with the visuals.
Purposes of Foley:
- Producing effects the are difficult to produce during production
- Enchaining natural sounds to make them more realistic
- Creating sounds that do not exist
- Providing subtle sounds
